The Alert is a fictional ship created by H. P. Lovecraft, which makes its only appearance in the 1928 short story "The Call of Cthulhu". It is a heavily armored steam yacht which originated in Dunedin, New Zealand, and is manned by "a queer and evil-looking crew of Kanakas and half-castes,"[1] in addition to being members of the Cthulhu cult. The crew of the Alert was slain in retaliation for attacking the schooner Emma, and upon being discovered by the Vigilant, it is towed to Sydney, Australia where it is sold for commercial use.
