The white polypous thing was a creature created by H. P. Lovecraft for his short story "The Call of Cthulhu".
Description[]
Apparently existing somewhere in the swamplands south of the city of New Orleans, Lousiana, "The Call of Cthulhu" gives a very brief description in a single passage:
| “ | There were legends of a hidden lake unglimpsed by mortal sight, in which dwelt a huge, formless white polypus thing with luminous eyes; and squatters whispered that bat-winged devils flew up out of caverns in inner earth to worship it at midnight. They said it had been there before D'Iberville, before La Salle, before the Indians, and before even the wholesome beasts and birds of the woods. It was nightmare itself, and to see it was to die. | „ |
From this, and the fact that the degenerate cult encountered by the police in the bayous were known to be worshippers of the Great Old Ones, it may be speculated that the white polypous thing belonged to that ancient race, although this theory cannot be confirmed with the information to hand. One counterpoint could be that the Great Old Ones are stated by the cult to be lying dead "inside the earth and under the sea", whereas the white polypous thing was quite possibly awake and active (see below).
Possible Sighting[]
In "The Call of Cthulhu", in the aftermath of the police's battle with the cult, the narrator interviews one of the officers, "an excitable Spaniard" named Joseph D. Galvez, who hints that he bore witness to
| “ | the faint beating of great wings, and of a glimpse of shining eyes and a mountainous white bulk beyond the remotest trees | „ |
However, the narrator is unsure whether this is something which Galvez had actually experienced, or the product of a fertile imagination overstimulated from the horrors of the evening.
